Day 1: First Impressions
So, I’m the worst at laundry separation. My whites are a sad, grayish testament to my laziness. When I saw the Jakehoe Anti-Dye Sheets, I figured it was worth a shot to stop ruining my clothes. The package arrived in a plain plastic mailer that was a little crumpled at the corner, but whatever, it’s what’s inside that counts.
Opening it up, there was this very mild, fresh, almost soapy smell. Not strong, just clean. The sheets themselves are about the size of a thick dryer sheet, but they feel different—more fibrous and slightly stiff, like a thick piece of felted paper. They come in a resealable pouch which is handy. My first thought was, “That’s it? I just toss this in and hope for the best?” It seemed almost too simple. My laundry routine at this point was basically hoping the laundry gods would be kind, so adding a single sheet felt like a tiny, hopeful ritual.

Week 1: The Adjustment Phase
Okay, so about ten days in. I started using a sheet with every mixed load. I have a small apartment-friendly washer so my loads are never huge. The first few washes, I was… skeptical. Nothing bad happened, which is good, but I didn’t notice anything amazing either. I’d pull out my colored towels with my white t-shirts and inspect them under the harsh bathroom light like a detective. No new pink tinges, but were my whites getting brighter? Not really. They just looked the same.
I started to wonder if this was just a placebo product. My skepticism peaked around the third load. That was the same week my coffee maker gave out, so my mood was already leaning towards “nothing works like it shouldve” (See? One typo, you’re welcome). Throwing the little sheet in started to feel like a meaningless step, a bit of theatre. “Performative laundry,” I called it. I kept at it, but my expectations were in the basement. It just became part of my routine, like trying not to overfill the detergent cap—sometimes remembered, sometimes not.
